The Justice and Witness Committee at Clackamas UCC has developed a great idea for the week leading up to Christmas! Please let me know if you would like to volunteer for this project!
We recognize that many of us and our neighbors are struggling this year financially to put food on the table, so the Justice and Witness Committee helped develop an idea for CUCC to meet this need.
From December 17-23, we will offer free turkey breast and ham to anyone in need from 4-6 pm on those days. Here is how this will work:
We will start the first night with 3 turkey breasts and 3 hams from Costco. Depending on demand each day, we will adjust our supply of turkey and ham for the next day and put on our outdoor sign the following message:
Free Turkey and Ham For those in need Thurs-Wed – 4pm-6pm While Supplies Last
Then from 4-6 pm this Thursday to the following Wednesday, we will have a volunteer at the church. The volunteer will stay behind the glass doors. We will store one turkey and one ham at a time in a cooler with ice just outside the door. We will have the rest of the turkeys and hams in the church refrigerator. As people come to take the turkey and/or ham from the outside cooler, our volunteer will smile and wave and replace the turkey and/or ham into the outdoor cooler (people can just take the turkey, or just the ham, or they can take both). This will keep social distance and keep the food refrigerated. At the end of each shift, the volunteer can tell me or another volunteer how many turkeys and hams are left. In case we run out before 6 pm, we will have a sign and tape to post on the glass door saying, “Sorry, we ran out of turkey and ham. Please come back tomorrow from 4-6.” We can estimate supply and demand as we move along.
If you would like to volunteer for this, please let me know asap. If you would like to support this project financially, you can donate on our website or send a check to PO Box 2562, Clackamas, OR 97015. In both places, you can write “Special Missions: Food Resources.”
